What is ozone therapy?
Ozone therapy introduces a gas with three oxygen molecules into the bloodstream which is known as o3 or ozone. The air we breathe is made up of two oxygen molecules, so introducing ozone into the body gets more oxygen into problem areas which can boost the immune system, reduce inflammation and eliminate pain when used properly.
While ozone therapy is a new method and is still being researched to fully understand its healing capabilities, there is proven research on its effectiveness to treat certain conditions, expediting the healing process in others, and playing a role in an overall health plan to help a person live a comfortable and pain-free life.
When would I need ozone therapy?
Ozone therapy is not appropriate for all patients, but it can be of assistance in many instances. In our practice, ozone therapy is often used as part of a patient’s overall health plan in conjunction with other methods of healing to address their specific issues.
When a patient has an issue that can be aided by the presence of additional oxygen, ozone therapy is often appropriate. O3 molecules can reduce inflammation directly, so people dealing with chronic pain as a result of inflamed areas, or lifelong conditions which cause excess swelling, are candidates for this treatment.
Since o3 can also kill bacteria, viruses, and other harmful agents in the body, this treatment is used in certain instances when people are sick or infected with a harmful substance. The excess oxygen can also boost the immune system and promote healing, so it can be used for something as simple as healing a wound quickly or treating an autoimmune disease.
How would I receive ozone therapy?
Ozone therapy can be administered in one of a few different ways. The proper method often depends on the desired result of the treatment.
Topical ozone therapy
For directly addressing a problem area on or close to the surface of the skin, ointment with o3 in it or the direct application of the gas on the skin can be administered.
Intramuscular injection
When targeting a bodily system or muscle, o3 can be directly injected into the area.
Intravenous (IV) infusion
Using an IV, a medical professional can add o3 to fight off infection or increase the overall immune system.
10-pass ozone therapy
A form of IV infusion, 10-pass administration of ozone therapy involves a sample of blood being taken, o3 being added and then it being re-administered to the bloodstream. This happens ten times when using this method.
