What does a herniated disc feel like?
Some people experience herniated discs and feel no pain at all, and the presence of symptoms usually depends on whether the disc has caused pressure to be put on a nerve. When there is pain associated with a herniated disc, it usually presents itself in some of the same ways a pinched or damaged nerve would.
Common symptoms include shooting pain in the arm or legs, usually dependent on where the herniated disc is located along the spine, which can happen when you move a certain way, stand up, or perform a sudden action like a cough. A herniated disc can also result in numbness or the inability to pick up or hold an object due to the affected nerve causing muscles to weaken.
What are the primary causes of herniated discs?
Herniated discs are usually, but not always, found in older patients. As the body ages, discs become less durable and are more susceptible to tears. In younger patients, it often takes significant action, such as lifting a very heavy object using the back, to cause a disc to herniate. As a person ages, the amount of stress or motion needed to herniate a disk becomes less. People who perform repeated actions as part of their job or hobbies, such as swinging a sledgehammer or regular lifting, can be at greater risk, as well as overweight people.
How are herniated discs treated?
Herniated discs can present themselves in many different ways, some people have no pain at all and others have a great deal of pain. In either case, the disc usually heals on its own without the need for surgery, but if you are in pain during the healing process then you still need to feel relief in order to live life to the fullest. Our team has helped many people with their herniated disc symptoms by providing holistic care through natural healing methods. We realize there is no one-size-fits-all cure for every patient, so we listen to our patients and create a plan that they are comfortable with to relieve their pain.
